After a series of failed rains, millions of animals in Turkana, north-west Kenya, were close to starvation. We funded the construction of a 110-metre-deep solar-powered borehole to supply water to 4,200 people and 15,076 donkeys, camels and livestock in four nearby villages. .

Our third animal health & welfare centre in Mauritania opened in Boghé so even more working animals in Mauritania had access to veterinary treatment and support.

We launched a new mobile clinic in Gondar, northern Ethiopia, where many people rely on working horses, donkeys and mules for their livelihoods.

In Manipur, eastern India, a severe outbreak led to the deaths of nearly 1,000 water buffalo in just two months. We provided funding so that our local partner could launch an emergency vaccination programme to protect water buffalo from this deadly and contagious disease.

Following a devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Morocco, we launched the most ambitious emergency response in our charity’s history. Our teams were on the ground providing critical veterinary treatment and emergency feed to working animals affected. We also supported working animals transporting essential supplies to communities after the disasters.

In August 2024, heavy rainfall in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, caused a devastating landslide at a rubbish dump. The landfill was home to around 4 million people and covered 37 acres of land – equal to 22 football pitches. It was also a key place of work for many people and their animals. The event led to people losing their lives, their homes, and having no choice but to abandon their working animals as they sought safety. We funded an emergency project so that local partners could support animals with emergency feed, vital veterinary care and shelter while working animals and their communities relocated to a safer environment.

Following years of campaigning by us and fellow stakeholders, a historic ban was announced on the donkey skin trade across Africa. The moratorium will protect millions of donkeys at risk of being slaughtered for ejiao, an ingredient extracted from the collagen in donkey skins and often used in traditional Chinese remedies and beauty products.

Thanks to our lobbying, working animals were included in Mauritania’s national census for the first time. Read below to learn more about how this impacts working animal welfare for good.

The first fixed animal health & welfare centre opened in Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe. For years our local partner delivered mobile clinics in the rural area of Zimbabwe, but this permanent centre will allow even more working donkeys and their owners to access critical care and support. The centre includes a veterinary clinic, in-patient stables, exercise areas and a water trough for local working animals. There’s also a community training building for workshops and space for children to learn about donkey welfare and the important role they play in their communities.
