Mika’s family relies on their horse Nechwan for essential income. When a painful dental infection caused him to stop eating, his owner turned to Working Animals International for help.

Five-year-old Nechwan has an important role transporting materials in the town of Boghé, in southern Mauritania. The work can be difficult due to changing weather and high temperatures, but Nechwan continues to work hard. He is extremely valuable to his family as he enables his owner, Mika, to earn a living and support his wife and their four children.

Mika became concerned when he noticed that Nechwan was having trouble eating and appeared to be in pain, so he brought him to our animal health & welfare centre in Boghé for help. Mika learned about our work several years ago and regularly attends our centre with his animals for checkups.

At the centre, our vets checked Nechwan over and discovered that he had a painful abscess on his lower jaw caused by a foreign body. The vets flushed Nechwan’s mouth to remove any food or debris that could be stuck and causing the problem. They then gave him an anti-inflammatory injection to reduce pain and swelling, and an antibiotic injection to treat the infection associated with the abscess.

Mika was advised to bring Nechwan back a few days later to repeat his treatment and make sure the swelling had gone down. The vets also recommended that he be given soft, moist feed and to rest from work until he was well and eating comfortably.

Mika said: “I’m very happy and grateful for the centre’s care. I recently bought Nechwan and want to care for him properly so that he can help support my family. I trust the veterinarians to treat and care for him well.”
