One Health recognises the vital connection between animals, people and the environment – when one suffers, we all suffer. In Magadi, southern Kenya, devastating floods left communities and animals facing immense hardship. Like many donkeys in the region, Naisiae plays an essential role in daily life, helping her family fetch water and firewood, and transporting possessions as they move in search of new pasture. In the aftermath of the floods, Naisiae became weak, stopped eating and was suffering from diarrhoea. Her owner, Pore, took her to a mobile clinic run in collaboration with our trusted local partner, African Network for Animal Welfare. At the clinic, vets diagnosed dehydration and malnutrition. They treated Naisiae with supportive therapy, including a multivitamin injection. And the team scheduled future vaccinations and gave Pore practical advice on caring for her donkey, as well as protecting herself and her animals from the impacts of climate-related events.
